The Inish Beg Beacon
January 2012www.inishbeg.com

2011 was our fourteenth year at Inish Beg and what a stimulating and fulfilling year it has been!  We have enjoyed welcoming back many loyal customers and friends throughout the year. We are even more delighted that so many have introduced family and friends to us; so the secret haven of Inish Beg is spreading to all the right quarters!

New Developments at Inish Beg in 2011

The Gypsy Retreat - A Hideaway for Two

“If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing slowly - …… very slowly”.
– Gypsy Rose Lee

The addition of another self-catering property means we can now accommodate 46 people on our 97 acres. The new addition is The Gypsy Retreat - two authentic and fully fitted adjoining Roma Caravans originally built in 1988 by Baz Warters and his team at Roma Caravans, which have been restored to their former glory. One comprises a bedroom with ensuite toilet and washroom, the other an open plan kitchen/dining/living room; the Gypsy Retreat also has its own Victorian outdoor roll top bath, atop a wooden decked area.  Set in its own private wicker fenced garden in a sylvan setting on the estate, it oozes bohemian and quirky charm and will appeal to both young design-savvy guests and the older hipster! It is already proving very popular so don’t be disappointed, book now

She was proud to be a gypsy a traveller on the road
With her tales of gypsy life and her stories that she told
She was proud to be of a family that cherished every day
Who rode upon Gods highway and cast her cares away

Inish Beg Organic Farm

The Organic Farm has more to offer too, as we continue to supply organic lamb locally, organic oats to Flahavan’s, and eggs, salad, herbs, fruit and vegetables from the walled garden to our guests. Several interesting fowl and 3 little pigs, who’ve been a big hit with the more junior visitors, have joined the sheep and miniature ponies. These continue to enthral and we were delighted our groom, Finbarr, was back with us and able to take families on horse drawn carriage rides around the estate this summer. Unfortunately, our bees have not recovered as we’d hoped, so the scarce sweet nectar that is Inish Beg Honey has been treasured.

The estate and walled garden...

...have never looked better than this Spring and we were surprised and thrilled to find we had been included in “The 100 Best Gardens in Ireland” published by Liberty Press in June.  As usual we participated in the West Cork Garden Trail (12th - 26th June) and were honoured to host the inaugural West Cork Plant & Garden Fair to mark the opening of the trail. This was a great success with several local and national garden centres, horticulturists, artisans and artists displaying their produce. This even had such a good response from both producers and visitors alike that we will do it again but even bigger, brighter and bolder on Sunday, 27th May!  Our gardens remained open throughout the summer and we were very pleased to meet so many avid gardeners and even more nature lovers in search of beauty, peace and tranquility. If unfortunately, you are unable to come and stay with us in 2012 do please come and visit the gardens and woodlands when you are in the area.

Weddings, Family Events, Special Occasions & Celebrations

During 2011 Inish Beg hosted numerous family get-togethers, birthday and anniversary celebrations, hen and stag parties and a record number of weddings. Irish people are scattered all over the world and family events are proving more and more popular, so Inish Beg is the perfect place to gather for some quality time, yet maintain your independence. Where else can you exclusively book ten luxury properties accommodating 46 people on 97 acres of private woodland, gardens and farmland with access to a heated pool and steam room and still be within a few miles of safe sandy beaches, wonderful scenery, great pubs, restaurants,  and lots of fun activities for all ages?

We were delighted that two of the spectacular weddings which took place here this year, featured in some of the best online and printed wedding magazines. The first, at Easter, was blessed with the very best weather of the year (24ºC). They were married by a Humanist minister at Hannibal’s H2O in the woodlands, then adjourned to the luxurious Boat House for a private civil ceremony, followed by drinks and nibbles and later partied the night away in a suitably festooned marquee overlooking the estuary.

Later in the summer another couple held their wedding celebrations in the same location but in unconventional Yurts - we can honestly say it was a pleasure to host so many beautiful unique ceremonies and receptions. Whether an intimate gathering of 10 - 65 people at The Boat House or a larger gathering of 70 – 600 people in a marquee, Inish Beg provides such an occasion with a truly special exclusive setting. In house catering is also available in 2012.

Festivals & Events at Inish Beg

Throughout the year Baltimore, Skibbereen and indeed West Cork as a whole, host a huge variety of festivals featuring music and dancing, art and literature, drama, artisan and sea food, traditional boats, horses, vintage cars, old time threshing, road bowling, etc and there are also the annual agricultural shows and coastal regattas on weekends throughout the summer so you are sure to find something to interest you in the locality. To mention just a couple with a special interest for Inish Beg guests:

Baltimore Fiddle Fair
The Fiddle Fair celebrates its 20th year in 2012! Now established as one of the favourite music festivals in Ireland with a big reputation! An impressive world class line-up of national and international artists perform in intimate settings in and around the beautiful seaside village of Baltimore. As well as the fantastic concerts there are a series of workshops and sessions including one at Inish Beg House. May is the very best time of the year to visit the gardens and to see this beautiful part of the country – book now if you can get away!

Walking Festival
The walking festival in autumn provides an opportunity to experience the secluded beauty and colourful history and the culture of the Baltimore area and the inhabited islands of Cape Clear, Sherkin and Heir. Arise at Inish Beg with the sun and set off through the autumnal woods with your guide and group to the sound of the Dawn Chorus…… stop off for a hearty breakfast at a local hostelry; set out for the hills of Lough Hyne Nature Reserve, or hop aboard one of the island ferries to take you to places apart from even the unspoiled rural mainland. After a healthy and companionable day out join with new friends and enjoy a night of good food and entertainment in Baltimore’s pubs and restaurants.
